Newhall Roundabout Named 'Project of the Year'

City Project Recognized by American Public Works Association

Post Date:12/11/2014 5:00 PM

The Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) named the City of Santa Clarita’s Newhall Roundabout the “2014 Project of the Year.” The APWA, which recognizes public agencies for their outstanding projects and programs, presented the award to the project team today at the organization’s annual awards luncheon in Lakewood. The project was also recognized as the “Project of the Year” by the APWA’s High Desert Branch at an event last week.

The Newhall Roundabout Project was completed in January 2014 and has greatly enhanced the walkability of Old Town Newhall by providing a pedestrian-friendly link between Hart Park, the Old Town Newhall Library and the businesses on Main Street. The project has also enhanced safety in and around the area by allowing for a smoother transition of commuter traffic, emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists traveling in and out of Old Town Newhall.

“The Roundabout has not only enhanced the aesthetics of Old Town Newhall, but has eased traffic flow and increase safety,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “When we finished the project we knew the impact would be positive. However, being recognized by the AWPA with the ‘Project of the Year’ award further demonstrates that this was a great project at the right time for our community.”

APWA is the professional association of Public Works, which represents leaders throughout the United States and Canada. The Southern California Chapter covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
