The City of Santa Clarita’s Ballet Folklórico program has a rich tradition in “Increasing Pride through Dance”. Ballet Folklórico is literally a story through dance; it teaches teamwork, poise, and confidence. Instructor Maria Romero began her Ballet Folklórico career as a dancer for the Newhall Community Center in 1996, and placed first in the Regional and National Champion Female Soloist competition in 2005. Maria became Artistic Director/Dancer with Ballet Folklórico Ollin de Aztlán at Cal Poly Pomona. She performed as part of the Grandeza Mexicana Folklórico Ballet Company, appearing in television and theater productions. Most recently, she participated in Danzantes Unidos Festival and was the youngest instructor to be nominated and selected to teach at the largest Folklórico conference in the nation. Maria is the recipient of many scholastic and professional dance awards and recognitions.
The Newhall Community Center is proud to offer two beginning classes, starting in Fall 2014. One class will be geared towards children ages 5 to 7, and another for ages 7 and up. Students will have an opportunity to perform two dances at the end of the session. In addition, a performance academy will be offered for intermediate and advanced students, and will focus on technique, posture, culture, and costume applications.
*The Community Center does not provide practice gear or shoes.
