GIS Data Information

GIS is an acronym for Geographic Information Systems. In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computerized system for managing large amounts of information and is capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Practitioners also regard the total GIS as including operating personnel and the data that go into the system.

GIS technology can be used for database management, spatial analysis and modeling, scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. For example, a GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster, or a GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution.

The GIS Division primarily uses ESRI products such as ArcView and ArcGIS running on Windows 2000 workstations. The GIS division also uses ESRI's ArcIMS software to created browser-based mapping applications. The GIS division also uses ERDAS Imagine for remote sensing applications.

All of the City's GIS layers are in State Plane, Zone 5, NAD83, Units feet.
