What can I put in my recycling bin?

I have a couch, refrigerator, or some other big bulky item I need to get rid of; what can I do?

  • If you’re a resident in the City of Santa Clarita and pay for trash service you can have up to four bulky item pick ups per year. Contact Waste Management at (661) 259-2398 to schedule a pickup at least 48 hours before your normal trash collection day.

How can I conserve water at home?

  • The average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two gallons per minute. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth in the morning and at bedtime can save up to 8 gallons of water per day, which equals 240 gallons a month.

How much energy is saved by recycling aluminum cans?

  • Manufacturing a can from recycled materials uses 5% of the amount of energy it would take to create a new can. (Alcoa)
    Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for 3 hours, or a TV for 2 hours. (Alcoa)

What is the current air quality in Santa Clarita?

  • By visiting The South Coast Air Quality Management District website ( www.aqmd.gov) you can view daily air quality forecasts for the City of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles.

Is there a river in Santa Clarita?

  • Yes! The Santa Clara River runs all throughout the City of Santa Clarita. This river runs for 84 miles from the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, through Santa Clarita to Ventura County emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Approximately 30 miles of this route is located in the Santa Clarita Valley. The Santa Clara River supplies drinking water for the areas of Santa Clarita, Fillmore, Santa Paula, and Ventura.
    Since 1994, the City of Santa Clarita has hosted a River Rally Clean Up of the Santa Clara River every year. The City takes pride in keeping the community clean and beautiful. The City works with hundreds of community members to preserve the river’s natural beauty and variety of wildlife by cleaning up portions of the Santa Clara River.

How can I drive more fuel-efficient?
While there are many ways to increase fuel-efficiency in your vehicle these three tips are easy to follow and mostly overlooked.

  1. Make sure your tires are properly inflated to prevent increased rolling resistance. Under-inflated tires can cause fuel consumption to increase by as much as 6%
  2. Lay off the petal! Flooring your accelerator can increase fuel consumption by as much as 40%!
  3. Observe the Speed Limit. Next time you hit the road give your self a little more time to get there. For every 5mph you go over 60 your gas mileage greatly decreases. It can increase your gas mileage up to 20%! (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.shtml)

What can I do with my old TV or another type of e-waste that’s just sitting around?

  • With many people upgrading there television sets to LCD’s and Plasmas older model televisions may be sitting around in your garage. If you have been wondering where you can drop the TV off look to our Goodwill Thrift store. The Goodwill accepts televisions and computers, any brand, old or new, working or not to recycle. You may also schedule a bulky item pick-up as explained in the previous question.

Do you have hazardous waste to dispose of?
Many items that are commonly used in the home contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment. Proper use and disposal of these materials is critical to your safety and the health of the environment. They may include:

  • Paint, paint thinner, and turpentine
  • Cleaners with acid or lye
  • Motor oil, gasoline, and antifreeze
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Glues and degreasers
  • Car and household batteries
  • Pool chemicals
  • Medication
  • CFL’s (compact fluorescent light bulbs)

The City offers free door-to-door collection of antifreeze, car batteries, motor oil and filters, and oil based and latex paints through Curbside, Inc. They can be reached at (800) HHW-PKUP. Residents are entitled to one pick up every 12 months. Some pick ups may require an authorization. Please contact Environmental Services Division at (661) 286-4098 for inquires.

What can I do with my Compact Fluorescent Light (CFLs) bulbs?

  • At each Home Depot store, customers can simply bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs, and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk. The bulbs will then be managed responsibly by an environmental management company who will coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance.
