Special Recycling Programs

Used Motor Oil Recycling

Recycling provides a safe alternative to the illegal disposal of motor oil and filters which are classified as household hazardous wastes. Recycled oil is re-refined and put back into the market for sale, saving thousands of barrels of oil per day.

Santa Clarita residents may conveniently recycle their used motor oil and filters in two ways:

1. Simply bring your used oil and filters to any of the over 20 Santa Clarita collection centers for recycling. For a list of the centers, contact the California Environmental Hotline at (800)CLEAN UP or go to http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/UsedOil/Centers/.

2. A curbside collection program allows Santa Clarita residents to recycle used motor oil and filters at no charge. To request a curbside collection appointment, contact Curbside, Inc. at (800) OIL-9255.

Preparing your motor oil and oil filters:

  • Drain the oil from your oil filters and drain pan. Place all oil into any empty, clean and reusable plastic container with a tight fitting lid. The size should not exceed five gallons.
  • Do not mix motor oil with any other automotive products such as antifreeze, gasoline, transmission fluid or other automotive lubricants.
  • Once motor oil containers are drained, they can be recycled at the curb with your regular recyclables, or reused the next time you change your oil. (Motor oil recycling locations and gas stations cannot dispose of your used oil containers.)
Christmas Trees/Mulch

The City of Santa Clarita offers free curbside Christmas tree recycling every year. By recycling your tree, you can help the environment and keep this valuable resource out of our landfills. All recycled trees are used as soil amendment, compost, or bagged for mulch to be given away every March at the Arbor Day celebration.

All single family and multi-family residents can recycle their Christmas trees. Single family residents should place their trees at the curb on their regular collection day during the two weeks following Christmas. Multi-family residents can place their trees adjacent to the refuse bins in their complex.

Remember:

  • No flocked, painted or fireproofed trees
  • No ornaments, tinsel or lights
  • No nails or tree stands
