MAY 2003 BROADCAST
FROM THE CITY MANAGER KEN PULSKAMP

What a great Spring we are having in Santa Clarita! The rain we had last month has resulted in beautiful blooms that awaken the senses and make us all glad to be alive and well in Santa Clarita! With all of the rain, keep in mind that it’s not too early to start your brush clearing. Make sure your property is not a fire hazard.

As usual, things are hopping at City Hall. Last month, we opened a new park in Canyon Country, the Oak Spring Canyon Park, located off Soledad in east Canyon Country. Already a popular destination for kids, the park features a half court basketball facility, a playground, shaded picnic area and a climbing rock.

This fall, we will be celebrating the grand opening of our new Aquatics Center, located at the Sports Complex (behind the Home Depot off of Soledad Canyon Road). This state-of-the-art Aquatics Center features a 50-meter Olympic- sized pool, a 25-meter diving pool and a free-form family recreation pool featuring a “zero depth” entry with a dual flume, two-story tall waterslide and water playground. The Aquatics Center is a regional facility that will be open to the public. Our hope is to host major aquatic events, such as, USA Swimming and U.S. Water Polo competitions.

We are currently under construction for another new park on a 17-acre site at McBean and Newhall Ranch Road. The new park will include three lighted tennis courts, three multi-purpose athletic fields, a perimeter walking path, restroom facilities, shaded picnic area, parking and landscaping, turf areas, a river trail connection and a playground area.

This fall the City Council will be selecting a trash hauler from a competitive bid process to provide trash services city-wide. This process will culminate in the selection of a trash hauler that can provide the community with the very best programs and services to meet our needs. Look for this issue to come before the City Council in October.

I welcome your thoughts and ideas to help make our City a better place to live, work and play. You can reach me via email at kpulskamp@santa-clarita.com or by phone at 661/255-4900.

Best Regards
