July 2008
A few weeks ago, the Santa Clarita City Council broke ground for a $25 million expansion of the Sports Complex. The project, which starts with grading this month, will bring the Sports Complex area to 34 acres of high quality, recreational facilities. The new 40,000 square foot, state-of- the-art skate park was designed in partnership with local skaters who worked hand-in-hand with the City to shape this new facility. The new skate park design reflects local users’ ideas and features large bowls, a flow course and skate plaza elements, an adjacent restroom and concession building. The new skate park will replace the existing skate park and will be four times its size. The skate park is expected to be completed and open to the public next spring.
Construction of a new gymnasium facility at the Sports Complex will be underway following the grading and is expected to be open to the public in 2010. The new gym will add many new amenities including more indoor basketball and volleyball courts to accommodate the community’s needs. The Sports Complex expansion project also includes a dog park, outdoor basketball courts with a roller hockey overlay, and the addition of much-needed playing fields which can be used for football, soccer, and free play. We are very excited about the Sports Complex expansion project and providing for the recreational needs of our community.
Don’t forget that summer in Santa Clarita means it’s time for the City’s free Concerts in the Park series.
