The City of Santa Clarita’s Newhall Community Center ‘Under-17’ soccer team competed in the semi-finals of the 2009 FC Irvine Showcase Soccer Tournament. The team battled its way through the tournament, competing against 200 premiere teams from California, Canada and Spain.
The Newhall Community Center’s Under 17 soccer team is comprised of local youth and is coached by Andrew Dexter, a former Masters College Soccer player. Though the team was considered the underdog of the tournament, they fell just short of the championship title by one goal.
“The Newhall Community Center’s quality youth sports programs are exhibited in the way the Center’s sports teams continuously take home titles at tournaments across the country,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “Although the Under 17 soccer team fell just short of the Championship title at the FC Irvine Showcase Soccer Tournament, their dedication to the team paid off in an impressive display of athleticism.”
