This summer there’s a new hotspot in town! In an effort to serve an increasingly tech-savvy community, the City of Santa Clarita’s Technology Services Department announces free wireless internet access at Central Park!
Central Park has gone high tech, offering free Wi-Fi to all visitors with wireless enabled devices. Over 75 percent of the park is covered by the wireless service. Park-goers with wireless-enabled laptops and personal desktop assistants are now able to surf the web at high speed!
Central Park was selected for the City’s pilot wireless program, in part so that it could become a more effective command center during times of emergency. If successful, City officials hope that the Wi-Fi program can be expanded throughout Santa Clarita.
The City will officially introduce the new Wi-Fi access July 16, 2005. The Wi-Fi kick-off event will be held in conjunction with the evening’s Concerts in the Park performance at 7:00 pm. Previous to the evening’s concert by Rolling Stones cover band “Sticky Fingers,” crowds gathered at Central Park can enjoy a free art show starting at 3:00 pm at the Art in the Park show.
The show will feature dozens of artists from throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. Throughout the evening, the City will provide several wireless enabled laptops to demonstrate to park-goers how easy it is to go online.
“The City is excited to offer this service to park-goers,” says Phil Sumagaysay, Information Technology Specialist for the City. “If this pilot program is successful, we hope to expand the program to include wireless access at other City parks and a number of public areas within the City. Wireless technology is becoming more and more mainstream in our community, and the City is eager to get onboard.”
