THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, METRO AND LOS ANGELES COUNTY BICYCLE COALITION TO HOST “BIKE TO WORK” WEEK MAY 15-19
Bike To Work Day Challenge Set For May 18

The City of Santa Clarita will join other cities and counties in a state-wide event for the biggest bicycle commute in California. In an effort for a better Santa Clarita and a better you, Bike to Work Week is an event that benefits the city by reducing traffic and pollution and for the individual, it helps save money on gas and promotes better health by increasing cardiovascular activity.

Thursday, May 18 will be the Santa Clarita Bike to Work Day Challenge. The City has set a healthy competition among fellow employers and employees in the area to see which businesses can involve the most employees to ride their bikes to work. There are two categories of competition, large employers with 100 or more full time employees and small employers with 99 or less full time employees.

Golden Spoon in Valencia will award the businesses in each category with the highest participation rate with free frozen yogurt for all participating cyclists. Metro will also award employers who submit the most pledges for Bike to Work Day a free catered lunch at the work site.

Individuals who want to participate can register for free at www.californiabikecommute.com. All participants who register are eligible to win prizes, gift certificates and an REI commuter bike. Employers who want to register their business can do so by contacting the City’s Environmental Services division at (661) 286-4098 or environment@santa-clarita.com.

Public pit stops offering cold drinks, refreshments and relaxation breaks will be open from 7 to 9 a.m. for Bike to Work Day participants. The pit stops are located at; Santa Clarita City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd. in the lobby -- hosted by the City, 28209 Avenue Stanford -- hosted by Answer Products, Trail Access at Newhall Avenue & 16th Street -- hosted by Newhall Bicycle, and Trail Access at Camp Plenty & Soledad Canyon -- hosted by LACO Bicycle Coalition.

In addition, the City is creating a new Biking and Walking Plan, or Non-Motorized Plan that proposes to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging community members to bike, walk, and use the transit. The Plan focuses on trips to and from work, school routes, and other trip purposes, such as shopping and everyday needs.
