HISTORY PAINTED ON THE WALLS
Murals to be Unveiled in Old Town Newhall

The City of Santa Clarita’s Arts and Events Office, in cooperation with the Newhall Redevelopment Agency, will unveil three murals on the walls of three major businesses in Old Town Newhall on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 2 p.m.

Themed murals include: a California Vaquero painting at the site of El Trocadero, a Walk of Western Stars painting at the Source, and the history of the Santa Clarita’s Southern Hotel will be on display at the Work Boot Warehouse.

“The City of Santa Clarita is thrilled to showcase these magnificent canvases of art depicting the beauty and historic points of interest of Newhall. The murals will serve to visually simulate the environment of the Newhall Arts and Theatre District while developing new attractions that are representative of Newhall's history and character,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean.

Participating artists will begin work installing their murals beginning Monday, August 27th. Each artist painted the 18’ x 9’ 6” murals on wood panels in their studio’s and will transfer the panels to each individual site for final installation.

The Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee reviewed 30 different artist proposals for the Newhall Mural Project and selected local artists, Victoria Sulski and Peter Bartczak for the Walk of Western Stars mural, Nicole Ponsler for the California Vaquero mural, and Frank Rock to paint the history of the Santa Clarita’s Southern Hotel.

Old Town Newhall is a 271-acre, mixed-use revitalization area in the heart of Santa Clarita featuring historic points of interest, a community center, Metrolink station and a thriving arts scene.

Old Town Newhall has become the focal point for arts and culture in the Santa Clarita Valley, with two theaters, the Canyon Theatre Guild and the Repertory East Playhouse, and the newly opened SCAA Art Gallery managed by the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association.
