Building & Safety: Building Codes and Design Criteria

Effective January 1, 2008, the Building and Safety Division of the Department of Public Works began enforcement of the 2007 State Building Codes for all new residential and non-residential construction projects.

Codes:

  • 2007 California Building Code
  • 2007 California Electrical Code
  • 2007 California Mechanical Code
  • 2007 California Plumbing Code
  • 2007 California Fire Code

Local Design Criteria:
- Seismic Design Category ‘D’ ‘E’ or ‘F’ as determined by CBC Section 1613.5.6
- Wind 85 mph
- Rainfall 3”/hr.
- Climate Zone 9

Theses codes are based upon the 2006 International Building Code, 2005 National Electrical Code, 2006 Uniform Mechanical Code, 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code, and 2006 International Fire Code adopted by the State of California Building Standards Commission (http:/www.bsc.ca.gov/), to provide for the safety and welfare of Californians through the implementation of the latest technology, materials, engineering, and construction methods.

The State Codes have been amended by the City of Santa Clarita to reflect safety considerations associated with local topographic, climatic and/or geologic conditions, as well as administrative provisions pertaining to the administration of these codes.  These amendments are available here (2008 Building Code Amendments - PDF*).
