What is the City doing to address traffic congestion?.
In response to the community’s
comments from the City’s Big
Picture community strategic plan,
the City of Santa Clarita faces the
challenge of providing adequate
roads and good mobility to its
growing number of employees
and residents.
With an eye to the future and the
City of Santa Clarita, the county
of Los Angeles, and the development industry are working in
partnership to improve our
transportation network.
The goal of this partnership is
to accommodate the Valley’s
continuing expansion, while
at the same time, protecting
neighborhoods and the natural
environment from the impact
of increased traffic. Each day,
the Cross Valley Connector is
estimated to reduce 5,000
hours of vehicle delay in
congested intersections and travel
lanes while improving air quality.
How will it look?
The Cross Valley Connector
Aesthetics Plan is a creative way to
use landscape, art, and materials
to beautify the numerous road and
bridge projects. While major road
projects can be viewed as dividing communities, the Aesthetics Plan
will provide the City with the
opportunity to design the nine
segments of the Connector in
such a way as to create a unifying
connection among the various
communities within the Santa
Clarita Valley.
How will it be funded?
With a price tag of over $245
million, the City has developed
a comprehensive funding strategy
to pay for the construction of this
important roadway. This includes
authorized funding from the Federal SAFETEA-LU
Transportation Bill, Federal
Appropriations from Senator
Barbara Boxer, Senator Dianne
Feinstein, Congressman Howard
McKeon, Supervisor Michael
Antonovich, City and County
Bridge and Thoroughfare Districts
(developer fees), City general
funds, City gas tax revenues,
dedication of land from
developers, strong private
sector participation as well as
grants from the Los Angeles
County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority, the
State of California, and the
Federal Highway Administration.
What is the City doing to be environmentally
conscious?
Special attention and emphasis
is placed on various aspects of
the areas that the Connector
passes through, such as hillsides
and the Santa Clara River.
The environmental review is
currently underway for the Golden
Valley Road Bridge over the Santa
Clara River segment.
