What is the CERT Program?
The City of Santa Clarita Community Emergency
Response Training (CERT) is designed to help out families,
neighborhoods, schools and businesses prepare for effective disaster/emergency
response through training and preplanning.
This training covers basic skills that are important
to know when emergency services are not immediately available.
You can make a difference by using the training to save lives
and protect property.
Emergency responders, emergency management personnel
and emergency trained volunteers provide training. Program material
covers earthquakes, fires, flood, hazardous incidents and other
life-threatening situations.
This Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
certified course does not require previous knowledge for participation.
First Aid Training is recommended.
CERT Is under the leadership of the City
of Santa Clarita and the County of Los Angeles Fire Department.
What Does a CERT Participant Learn?
Community Emergency Response Training instructs
individuals to prepare to respond to anticipated disruption and
potential hazards following a disaster. Participants will learn
to:
- Recognize the potential hazards associated
with a particular type of emergency and take the appropriate
action.
- Identify, organize and utilize available resources
and people.
- Treat for life-threatening conditions through
Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (S.T.A.R.T.).
What Does CERT Involve?
Participants attend a total of seven weekly classes.
Each class is approximately three hours in length. Classes include
lecture, videos and interactive participation and skills assessment.
$30/person fee includes all
course materials and equipment.

What are the CERT II Program Areas of Training?
Critical Incident Stress Management
A comprehensive, organized approach
for the reduction and control of the harmful aspects of stress
in emergency/disaster incidents. Participants learn how to be
stress resistant. This training is lecture based.
Animals in Disaster-Awareness and Preparedness
A self-paced course designed on
how disaster affects people and their animals. Learn how to prepare
for the welfare and care of animals when an emergency occurs.
This training is independent study (FEMA independent study course
#IS-010.)*
Community Traffic Safety
Learn from local law enforcement
officials the dos and don'ts of dealing with traffic safety during
an emergency. This training is lecture based.
Incident Command System/SEMS Training
Understand and work with the Incident
Command System (ICS) as adapted by the standardized Emergency
Management System (SEMS). Learn why it is important in an emergency
response to operate within a clear and consistent organizational
response to operate within a clear and consistent organizational
structure. This training is lectured based.
