Potential Winter Storm Danger
Situations in the Santa Clarita Valley

Flash flooding in canyons -
Heavy rain and saturated soils can cause very sudden increases in the depth and velocity of run-offs. This can happen without warning. n

Danger from burn areas -
Areas that have recently been burned are susceptible to mud flows. If new vegetation has not yet matured, the top soil can wash off creating serious mud flows down slope from the fire burn areas.

Local flooding -
Heavy rains can cause local ponding of water in low lying areas. Beware of these areas since they are potentially deep and dangerous.

Electrical outages -
Storm conditions, including heavy rains, flooding, and strong winds can cause local power outages. Residents should be prepared to live without electricity for periods of time.

Mud flows in vicinity foothills -
During heavy rains, the ground can become so saturated that it can no longer absorb water. This can lead to water flows that strip off the top soil, creating mud flows.

Sewage system problems -
Local flooding can have the potential to overwhelm sewage systems. Residents should be careful about wading in flooded areas.

Water contamination -
Local flooding can impact the water distribution system. Residents should monitor local media for information on any problems with drinking water.

In the Event of a Flood

Tune in to the local radio station for emergency information and instructions from local authorities.

Keep away from flood control channels, facilities, and river bed areas.

Secure the safety of your family first before property.

If you are unsure what to do, seek higher ground, such as a second floor or roof top, and wait for the storm to pass and/or wait to receive assistance from local emergency personnel.

Do not attempt to evacuate by automobile, or swim through moving water. Drowning can easily occur in a flood situation.

If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Flood waters can rise rapidly and sweep a car away.

Stay away from power lines and electrical wires. Electrical currents can travel through water. Report downed power lines to the utility companies.

Be alert for gas leaks.

Do not sightsee in flooded areas.

Avoid unnecessary trips. If you must travel during the storm, dress appropriately. Advise others of your route and destination.

Prepare for the Storm Season

  • Discuss evacuation procedures with family members.
  • Decide on a point of contact should there be a separation of family members.
  • Discuss an evacuation plan with your neighbors.
  • Keep emergency supplies on hand in an emergency kit; a portable radio, a flashlight, extra batteries, water, canned food, and a first aid kit.
  • Purchase or renew your flood insurance policy.
  • Know how to turn off your utilities.
  • Learn more about the path of storm flows in your area.
  • Understand the pattern of events that would lead to a flood situation.
  • Listen regularly to weather forecasts and public service announcements during the storm season.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you are in an area that may be impacted, keep sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, and lumber handy for waterproofing.
  • Keep on-site drainage facilities clear of debris and overgrowth.
  • Know your access route(s), determine if it could be disrupted in storms.
  • Work with neighbors on drainage solutions and avoid diverting drainage flows.
