The Big Picture: General Information About Your City

General Information About Your City:

The City of Santa Clarita, incorporated on December 15, 1987, includes the communities of Newhall, Valencia, Canyon Country and Saugus. The City is 50 square miles and is situated in-between Interstate 5 and State Route 14. Santa Clarita has a population of approximately 163,000 with an average growth rate of about three percent annually. Santa Clarita is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County.

The City provides municipal services to residents including bus service, recreation programs, parks, the sports complex, traffic signals, roads, the stormwater utility, sidewalks, trash and recycling, film permits, building permits, contracted law enforcement through the Sheriffs’ Department, community education on a wide variety of topics, preservation of open space, special projects such as the clean up of the Whittaker Bermite site and the effort to prevent mega-mining in Soledad Canyon, plus cultural arts and events including the annual marathon, the cowboy poetry and music festival and the summer concert in the parks series.

The City’s budget is based on a fiscal year that begins July 1. This year, the City’s budget is just over $153 million. Approximately $25 million of that budget is derived from sales tax revenue. This fiscal year, the City has allocated more than $69 million to capital projects. These are the “big ticket” projects that include new parks, beautification and landscaping, traffic circulation improvements, new facilities and buildings, streets, bridges, trails and transit.

This is what we DON'T do...
The City of Santa Clarita does not have jurisdiction over:

  • the local schools and colleges
  • water
  • the hospital
  • freeways
  • development outside the City's boundaries

Various agencies, including the County of Los Angeles and the State of California, have oversight of these services.

Santa Clarita is a contract City with five City Councilmembers elected at large by registered voters within the City limits. The City Councilmembers serve as Mayor for one year, determined by a majority vote of the City Council. Currently, the City Council is comprised of: Bob Kellar, Cameron Smyth, Frank Ferry, Marsha McLean and Laurene Weste (you may find out more about the City Council here).
