The Big Picture: Past Accomplishments

The four previous community planning initiatives have been called “Share the Vision”. As part of the process, the community participants were invited to respond to questions such as:

  •   Name the top three issues facing our community now and into the next decade…
  •   The greatest challenge facing Santa Clarita in the next several years is…
  •   If I had $1,000,000 to spend in the community, I would spend it on…
  •   I feel that the City does the following things well…
  •   I feel that the City does not do the following things well…
The following is a representation of key action items that were identified and completed as a result of the previous “Share the Vision” projects.

Share the Vision I (1991-1994)
Transportation Completed Plum Canyon/Whites Canyon construction.
Transportation Widened Soledad Canyon Rd to six lanes.
Transportation Implemented a local bus system.
Growth Adopted a hillside & ridgeline preservation ordinance.
Growth Established a ‘City Center’
Parks Acquired the Saugus cite for a Central Park.
Parks Created a Teen center.
Economic Development Attracted a small conference center/hotel (Hyatt).
Environmental Opposed the location of solid waste landfills, prisons or off-road vehicle parks in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Share the Vision II (1994-1997)
Transportation Improved Dial-a-Ride service.
Transportation Increased Transit usage.
Growth Initiated annexations of Vista Del Canon, Bouquet Park, Seco Canyon, North Valencia, and Towsley Canyon
Parks Established City wide trails.
Parks Conducted Ballet in the Parks.
Parks Established Cowboy Poetry Festival.
Public Safety Focused on implementation of crime prevention activities.
Public Safety Instituted program of “Community Policing”.
Public Safety Conducted more Neighborhood Watch training programs.
Economic Development Developed a strategy to attract new businesses & corporate headquarters.
Economic Development Worked with businesses to retain & expand current economic base.
Economic Development Developed a marketing program to shop in the City, promote film & tourism and provide resources to small businesses.
Diversity Established the Human Relations Forum.
Diversity Established cultural awareness programs.
Environmental Defeated Elsmere Canyon Landfill.
Environmental Focused on the Santa Clara River & purchased adjacent available land.

Share the Vision III (1998-2001)
Transportation Actively participated in local and regional transportation forums to establish funding for local improvement projects.
Growth Actively pursued Sphere of Influence.
Parks Facilitated parent/youth education to address teen issues.
Public Safety Obtained more law enforcement resources through grants.
Economic Development Developed an overall financial strategy to address the City’s ongoing program and capital improvement needs.

Share the Vision IV (2002-2003)
Economic Development Created a new strategic plan for revitalizing Downtown Newhall.
Economic Development Created economic partnerships within the City such as the ‘Shop Local’ campaign with local auto dealers, Business-to-Business Industry Show with VIA and the Annual Aerospace Conference with College of the Canyons.
Growth Aggressively pursued Federal funding for the Cross Valley Connector.
Growth Developed a General Plan with the County of Los Angeles that will guide land use and development in the entire Santa Clarita Valley over the next 20 years.
Growth Submitted an aggressive list of projects for a Federal grant program.
Parks Formed a youth advisory group.
Parks Approved funding for a temporary Homeless Shelter.
Parks Worked to secure federal funding to conduct the feasibility analysis for a Santa Clara River study.
Parks Completed an Open Space Plan.
Education Participated with the Santa Clarita Valley School Coalition.
Environmental Opposed the TMC project.
Environmental Worked to expedite clean-up of Whittaker-Bermite.
Environmental Opposed new standards set by CA Regional Water Control Board.
Public Safety Implemented a program to prosecute severe offenders of City codes to keep City safe and aesthetically pleasing.
