The Community Development Department consists of three divisions: Planning, Community Preservation, and Economic Development. Planning is tasked with short and long-term community planning. Community Preservation maintains and assures the safety, appearance and value of buildings and property in the City. Economic Development aids in the economic growth of the City by encouraging responsible economic development that result in a jobs/housing balance with quality jobs, an increased sales tax base, and economic wealth for the community. All three divisions coordinate with other City departments, the citizenry and those who do business in the community to help plan and sustain the Santa Clarita way of life. Additionally, the Community Development Department also manages the Successor Agency, which is responsible for winding down the former Redevelopment Agency.
Tom Cole joined the City of Santa Clarita as Community Development Director in December 2012. In this position, he manages the City’s Planning, Economic Development, Community Preservation and Redevelopment operations. Tom has lived and worked in Santa Clarita for more than 20 years. Prior to joining the City of Santa Clarita, he served as Chief Operations Officer for the William S. Hart Union School District, and has held several local leadership roles, including Business Development/Project Management with Wimsatt Contracting Company; Vice President/Director of Construction at Highland Development Company; Director of Development at LNR Property; and Senior Project Manager with Newhall Land and Farming.
