With minimal rainfall and the hot, dry summer months upon us, Santa Clarita Valley residents are encouraged to carefully manage our limited water supply. In an effort to rethink water consumption and reduce water usage in the garden, the Castaic Lake Water Agency (CLWA) has teamed up with the City of Santa Clarita to offer residents a new gardening tool: ¡°SCV Colorful Landscapes for Water Conservation,¡± a booklet that is now available free of charge.
The special booklet was created with the assistance of local business owner Richard Green of Green Landscape Nursery and provides detailed information and photographs about what plants thrive in our area with minimal water use, how to best water lawns and plants, photographs of low water use landscape and tips for reducing landscape water consumption in the Santa Clarita Valley.
¡°Even though conservation efforts are largely focused on reducing landscape use, residents can still enjoy beautiful and colorful landscapes. The free booklet is one of the best resources I¡¯ve ever seen for Santa Clarita residents who are looking to create beautiful and low water use lawns and gardens. I highly recommend it,¡± said Mayor Laurene Weste.
The booklet also includes information about a series of free workshops being offered at the CLWA Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant and Conservatory Garden, located at 27234 Bouquet Canyon Road. The classes include a wide variety of information including landscape design principles, trees for the SCV and what are the best soils, fertilizers and weed and pest abatement products.
