FOURTH OF JULY SANTA CLARITA STYLE!
by Ken Striplin, Assistant City Manager

In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain.
Thousands across the nation often mark the red, white, and blue holiday with a picnic or barbecue with family and friends, topped off with fireworks displays in the evening.

Each year, the City hosts its own Fourth of July celebration, Santa Clarita style. The City has teamed up with a list of community organizations to present a full day of activities for everyone to enjoy. From dusk until dawn, events will be happening throughout Santa Clarita.

To kick off the national holiday, the Santa Clarita Rotary Club will be serving hotcakes at 7:00 a.m., in the Roger Dunn golf parking lot on San Fernando Road, between 5th and 6th Streets at its annual Pancake Breakfast.

ParadeThe Santa Clarita Runners will kick off the July 4th festivities with the 25th running of the Independence Day Classic 5K Road Race along the City's parade route. The event has a spot for every one in the family including a 5K race, a 5K non-competitive walk and a Kids’ K Fun Run.

Age group awards are five deep in most categories, and all Kids' K finishers receive a medal. The post race awards ceremony also offers a raffle drawing with prizes including local merchant and restaurant gift certificates, Angel and Dodger tickets, movie theater passes, and other fun prizes.

This year, corporate sponsors can enter 5-person employee teams to compete for the title and recognition of "Fastest Company in the Santa Clarita Valley". The club offers other sponsorship levels as well in order to maximize net proceeds from the event, which are donated to the local SCV high school cross country programs.

Pre-registration entry fees through June 30th for the run and walk are $25, including a newly designed, patriotic t-shirt, and $15 for the Kids' K with shirt. A $5 late registration fee applies after June 30th. Entry forms will be available at local fitness centers, sporting goods stores, and Vincenzo's in Saugus or Agua Dulce, on the club website at www.scrunners.org.

Race day registration is available starting at 7:00 AM at Newhall Park near the start line on Dalbey. The Kids' K starts at 8:30, with the 5K Run and Walk following at 9:00. Log on to www.scrunners.org for more information and registration details.

The Santa Clarita Parade Committee will present its Fourth of July Parade at 9:45 a.m. in Newhall. Each year, spectators fill the streets of San Fernando Road to see the floats trimmed in red, white and blue by City businesses, youth groups, organizations and residents.

This year’s theme is “20 Years of Cityhood,” in honor of the City of Santa Clarita’s 20th anniversary. Santa Clarita's First Mayor, Hon. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, will serve as the parades’ grand marshal. The mile-long parade will travel down Lyons Avenue to Orchard Village, finishing at Newhall Park. For parade info, please visit www.scvparade.com.

FireworksAlso, The Greens at Valencia will feature an old fashioned 4th of July BBQ and a live band. Make sure to bring your blanket for later to enjoy prime viewing of the fireworks from the putting course. Please call 661-222-2900 for reservations.
To conclude the day long festivities, the City of Santa Clarita is sponsoring “America Journey from American Dream”, a captivating fireworks show to be displayed over the Westfield Valencia Town Center at 9:15 p.m. The colorful, 30 minute exhibition of sparkles in the sky can be seen for miles and continue to delight community members.

To avoid road closures, please enter the Westfield Valencia Town Center from Magic Mountain Parkway, Valencia Blvd., and Citrus Avenue entrances. McBean Parkway between Valencia Blvd. and Magic Mountain Parkway will be closed to traffic from 8:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.

While you’re watching the magnificent fireworks show, listen on your portable radio or from your car radio to the fireworks soundtrack broadcasted live on KHTS AM 1220.

If you’re interested in the best seat in the house for the fireworks show, why not become a volunteer? As a volunteer, participants have the opportunity to help out at the exciting event and work in a great location for viewing the fireworks show. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older and will work enforcing the protective area around the fireworks display known as the “Fall Zone” or be selected as part of the crew that monitors the fireworks as part of the “Fire Prevention Team.” Fireworks will also appear at Magic Mountain, Richard Rioux park in Stevenson Ranch and at Castaic Lake.

Sponsors include: The Signal, Westfield Valencia Town Center, KHTS AM 1220, Santa Clarita Valley Living Magazine, Burrtec Waste Industries, Andy Gump, Inc., Thomas Properties, Hyatt Valencia, CleanStreet, Wolf’s Towing, and American Medical Response.

For more information or to become a volunteer, please contact the City’s Arts & Events Office at 661-286-4018.
