By June 12, 2009, federal law required that all full-power television broadcast stations stop broadcasting in analog format and broadcast only in digital format. This change only affects viewers receiving free television via antenna. The change to digital transmission should have no, or significantly little, affect in Santa Clarita since the surrounding geography of the Santa Clarita Valley already hindered free reception.
Older analog television sets in Santa Clarita receiving service through Time Warner Cable, AT&T or any of the satellite dish providers will experience no impact with the change to digital transmission, with or without a cable box. Since the switch over has already happened, June 12, residents currently receiving television service were not affected.
Television Recycling
If you are replacing your television, at any time, please make sure it doesn’t end up in the landfill.
In California, it’s illegal to throw most electronic items, including televisions, in the trash because of the hazardous materials they contain. These hazardous materials can be harmful to the environment and human health if not properly recycled. There are several options to recycle your old television. Please see below for the following options:
- City residents that pay for trash service are entitled to four (4) bulky item pick-ups per year, with three (3) items per pick-up. Bulky-items include old TVs, computers, and other electronic waste [E-waste]. If you are eligible and would like to schedule a free bulky-item collection, please contact Blue Barrel/Waste Management at (661)259-2398.
- You can use Earth911’s recycling locator to find a television recycling location near you- http://earth911.com/
