Emergency Management: Sheriff's Programs

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station Crime Prevention Unit offers the following programs in our effort to improve safety and security in our Valley:

Neighborhood Watch
The purpose of this program is for neighbors to get to know each other, which will decrease the likelihood of crime occurring undetected in that area.  With the assistance of a crime prevention deputy, residents will learn how to protect themselves from burglary, assault, theft and vandalism. For more information, please contact Deputy Baylis at (661) 255-1121 x5164.

Safe House
The Safe House program is designed for residents who are at home during the school travel hours to act as a safe haven for children who need help on the way to and/or from school.   Volunteers are needed to offer their home as a safe house for our children.   Please contact our Crime Prevention Office at 255-1121

Street Safety
A Street Safety program provides safety tips for people who are driving or walking from one place to another.  We also provide information on how to decrease the opportunities for becoming a street crime victim.

Vacation Check
Contact our station prior to leaving your home when vacationing and station personnel will check your home while your away.  We provide a little peace of mind regarding your home so you can enjoy your vacation.

Ride-Along
This is an opportunity to go on patrol with Santa Clarita Patrol Deputies.   You will become familiar with the patrol car, patrol procedures and personally see criminal activity and incidents as they occur and how they are handled and investigated by your deputies.

Business Alert
The Business Alert program helps protect local businesses from thefts and burglaries, and teach employees about shoplifting prevention, credit card fraud and robbery prevention.  We will also provide a security review of the premises.

Station Tour
A tour of the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station is available to all civic groups, clubs and organizations.  It is ideal for young children.  The tour includes an overview of station operations, the 9-1-1 system, the helicopter, the patrol cars and the jail area.

Haunted Jailhouse & Open House
This annual event is held at the end of October in conjunction with Halloween.   Our jail is transformed into a haunted house and our parking lot is loaded with displays and carnival type games benefiting charitable organizations.

Teen Court
This program is an alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system in that selected suspected juvenile offenders are tried, convicted or acquitted, and sentenced by a jury of their peers from our local high schools.  The intent of the program is to utilize peer pressure in a positive direction to foster law-abiding behavior.  Thus far, the recidivism rate is less than one percent.

COBRA
COBRA, or Career Offenders Burglary Robbery Apprehension team, assists our Detective Bureau in tracking and arresting known criminals who continue their criminal acts.  COBRA is also heavily involved with anti-gang education in our schools and suppressing gang activity within our valley.  COBRA deputies conduct follow-up investigations on crimes occurring in our valley and routinely organize special operations, such as bicycle patrols, surveillance, curfew violation patrols and truancy sweeps, in their on-going efforts the number of youths committing crimes.

Community Advisory Committee
This committee, made up of Santa Clarita Valley Residents and business people, was formed to develop a better understanding between the community and the Sheriff's Department via education and communication.  The members advise the station captain about concerns the community has where the Sheriff's Department can play a role in these concerns.  The committee also takes on projects such as crime prevention programs, parental responsibility ordinance, Neighborhood Watch, and Safe House recruitment.   The C.A.C. is involved with special programs such as: procuring new equipment for the patrol vehicles and acting as a liaison between the deputies and the community.

Community Academy
This program is open to all residents or business persons living or working within the Santa Clarita Valley.  It is offered to foster a better understanding between the community and the deputies who serve them.  Attendees have the opportunity to learn more about the Sheriff's Department via classroom instruction, field trips/activities and guest lecturers who have expertise in their respective fields.   Some of the topics discussed include: criminal and traffic law, department policies and patrol procedures, tours of department facilities, firearms safety and training and current events/incidents involving law enforcement.  The class is free to those who attend and is offered several times throughout the year.

For more information regarding these programs or any other inquiries you may have, contact our Crime Prevention Office at (661)255-1121.
