The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, advocacy, education and service.

We firmly believe that cancer will be reduced to a chronic and treatable condition. With that in mind, by the year 2015, our goal is to:

BMCFBrenda Mehling Cancer Fund

The Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund (BMCF) supports patients ages 18-40 as they undergo cancer treatment. It provides services to meet daily needs that are not covered by insurance. Typical grants measure $600 and include co-payments, rent and mortgage, transportation, car insurance, repairs, and groceries.

Since Brenda founded it in 2001, the Fund has helped nearly 175 recipients, providing over $150,000 in services. She built it for young adults her age to maintain self-respect during months of treatment and minimize the stress of associated financial challenges. Even though she is no longer with us, we are working to fulfill Brenda's vision of a nationwide support organization that helps young adults fight - and beat - the disease. Henry Mayo HospitalHenry Mayo Hospital

Caring for Cancer with Compassion
At Henry Mayo, cancer care has traditionally been one of our best services. This can be attributed to the fact that our cancer program has several major components, including: a cancer committee, which is a multi-disciplinary group made up of healthcare professionals who care for cancer patients; a cancer registry, responsible for recording and classifying every cancer patient treated at the hospital; and regular meetings with physicians and staff with the primary purpose of making treatment decisions and recommendations.

Our cancer program, which is on par with some of the leading hospitals around the country, has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons since 1988, and received a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation in 2006. This is the highest level of accreditation, with less than half of the surveyed facilities receiving this honor.

We also have a first-rate breast imaging center—the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center—that enables us to successfully screen, diagnose and treat breast cancer, an affiliation with Vantage Oncology to provide radiation therapy on our campus, a nursing unit with an Oncology focus and Outpatient Infusion Center, and a Smoking Cessation Program.

Other aspects of our Cancer Program include our strong community partnership with the American Cancer Society, cancer support groups and community outreach, including our work with the Santa Clarita Valley Coalition for Compassionate Care.
