ROAD to the cure

A big part of the City’s effort to host the 2008 Amgen Tour of California is to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.  The City is coordinating a cancer fund raising raffle called Road to the Cure.  The raffle prizes are being collected by key community partners, Road Magazine and the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, and include sports memorabilia from cycling, NASCAR, boxing, hockey and other sports, as well as jewelry and bikes.

The proceeds from the raffle will go directly to and will be split evenly between Santa Clarita’s Michael Hoefflin Foundation and Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer Initiative.  The raffle tickets cost $5 each.

ROAD to the cure Raffle tickets can be purchased in person at the following locations/events:

The raffle drawing will occur immediately after the start of Stage 7 of the Tour of California on Sunday, February 24, 2008.  Ticket holders do not have be present to win, however, those that are present will be able to select whichever prize they desire.  The order of selection of prizes will be based on the order of the tickets drawn.  The prizes that remain will be assigned to the tickets that are drawn and then will be available for pick-up at City Hall in Suite 120 on February 25, 2008 or arrangements can be made for the prizes to be mailed. The City disclaims any responsibility or liability in connection with the genuineness of the prizes, their suitability for a particular purpose or their authenticity. The purchase of a raffle ticket does not guarantee winning a prize.

More items are added to the raffle every week so check back to see the other great items that are being donated!

Jill Kintner Mountain Bike Racing Jersey Autographed

At age 24, Jill Kintner rules her sport.  Kintner is the undisputed queen of women's 4-cross (aka 4X, or mountaincross), a very fast, often furious sprint on a mountain bike (typically lasting around 60 seconds or so) down hilly, twisting, obstacle-dotted courses involving four riders racing head-to-head. Essentially a hybrid of BMX and downhill mountain bike (MTB) racing, 4-cross is an abrupt, frantic test of agility, thrust and savvy - sort of a muscle-powered, two-wheeled version of sprint-car racing on a bad dirt road.

During the 2005 racing season, not quite four years after she made the transition from being a champion BMX racer (winning 70+ professional victories on 20-inch wheels) to racing 4-cross on 26-inch MTB wheels, Kintner made it vividly clear that no woman in the world is better in this cycling discipline. She is ranked No. 1 in the world by UCI in 4-cross among elite pro women, and her former coach, Scott Sharples, sees no reason why she can't hold that position for years to come.
