The Community Development Department consists of three divisions: Planning, Community Preservation, and Economic Development. Planning is tasked with short and long-term community planning and Housing. Community Preservation maintains and assures the safety, appearance and value of buildings and property in the City. Economic Development aids in the economic growth of the City by encouraging responsible economic development that result in a jobs/housing balance with quality jobs, an increased sales tax base, and economic wealth for the community. All three divisions coordinate with other City departments, the citizenry and those who do business in the community to help plan and sustain the Santa Clarita way of life. Additionally, the Community Development Department also manages the Successor Agency, which is responsible for winding down the former Redevelopment Agency.
Tom Cole joined the City of Santa Clarita as Community Development Director in December 2012.
